View any map of Portland and mix up all the neighborhoods, you’ll still be able to pick out Historic Ladd’s Addition in a heartbeat. Ladd’s was the first housing development in the State of Oregon and was platted in 1891 with the first homes built in 1905. William S. Ladd (who also credited with Laurelhurst and Eastmoreland) supposedly created this neighborhood after L’Enfants design of Washington D.C. but on a smaller scale. From huge Arts & Crafts styled homes to classic bungalows, from the main circle’s rhodies to each of the other four directionally placed rose gardens, Ladd’s addition is a special neighborhood in Portland.
The Hawthorne bridge and thus access to downtown Portland is a mere 1.25 miles from the center circle which makes this NE neighborhood a huge bicycle commuters dream. With Division on one side and Hawthorne on the other, there are great shops, cafe’s and restaurants within walking distance. Community involvement ranges greatly from hosting the annual Muddy Boot Festival, to embracing the celebrated Abernathy School. Residents are passionate about protecting the 100 year old elm tree’s and actively participate in caring for the 4 encircled rose gardens thru the FLAG program.
My favorite event in this neighborhood happens every summer on wednesday nights….when everyone brings a guitar and joins in the center circle for a good old fashiond folk song sing along. Grab a desert from Palio’s (right there on the main circle) and join in! Bring a blanket and your friends and family–maybe I’ll see you there!
